“The era of cheap flights is over”

It’s getting more expensive to fly.

Airline ticket prices reached record levels in April. Compared to April 2019 – a year before the corona pandemic – a plane ticket costs an average of 36 percent more today, as “NZZ” reported on Monday. The newspaper is based on the national consumer price index and the Federal Statistical Office.

For this year, that means: Those who book their summer vacation will likely have to pay much more than their winter vacation. Because in the last few months, prices have risen again. So it would be worth booking early.

The end of last minute offers?

In addition to rising kerosene prices, the price increase is due to the travel boom. Many people want to go on vacation again after the corona lockdown – but airlines are currently offering fewer seats on their planes than before the pandemic. Switzerland, for example, offers only 85 percent of the capacities in 2019 this year. Tourist demand is greater than supply – the result is price increases.

Sebastian Ebel, who has been head of Tui AG since October, knows this too. In an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”, Ebel tells Tui there has been “extraordinarily high demand” for the summer. Greece is very popular with Germans. In some resorts, there are almost no hotel beds left.

Ebel says the days of cheap flights are over. There will be no last minute offers this summer. Prices are likely to increase even more as airlines know that more and more people are booking shortly before departure. “Spontaneous bargains would be the absolute exception.” (NO)
