The US consumer protection agency FTC wants to impose new restrictions on Facebook group Meta. As the FTC announced Wednesday, Meta should be prohibited from releasing new products or functionality without being checked by a data protection supervisor. (archive image)

The group should also no longer be allowed to commercially use the data of users under the age of 18. Meta has criticized the plans as a political act and wants to reciprocate.

Currently, three FTC members will decide on proposals that Meta can comment on during this process. Meta can then go to court.

The FTC accuses Meta of violating data protection regulations, which in turn is enforced for breaches. Among other things, software developers had unjustified access to user data in some cases. The Facebook group last received additional data protection requirements in 2020.
