Available from 1 May: Deutschland-Ticket for 49 euros per month.

The ticket for 49 euros is valid in Germany since Monday. Anyone with a monthly subscription can now travel as many times as they want in regional and local transport across Germany. The ticket is based on the experiences of the nine euro ticket from last summer.

In addition to the nearly eleven million existing customers switching to Deutschlandticket, which is cheaper than previous subscriptions, the transportation industry expects up to six million new subscribers. You can buy the ticket from Deutsche Bahn – on the website, in the Navigator app or in sales centers – as well as from many transport associations and other service providers, for example the Dein Deutschlandticket app. The railroad reported high demand for tickets on Monday. It is said that there may be disruptions during the reservation.

The ticket for 49 euros can also be a good option for cheap city trips in Germany for guests from abroad, for example from Switzerland. A residence in Germany is not required for the purchase. Although it is an annual subscription, it can be canceled on a monthly basis. To do this, the cancellation must be sent by the 10th of the month for the subscription to expire at the end of that month. So for a city or trip to Germany, you can subscribe to a 49 euro ticket and cancel again a little later, until the 10th of the same month.

Scholz wishes you a good trip

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) wished “good trip” with the new ticket. He explained that he was interested in “a simple and inexpensive proposition that makes public transport attractive and helps us meet our climate goals” and was pleased with “the great interest in this important modernization project”.

Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD) sees the Deutschlandticket as an important contribution to increasing the attractiveness of life in the country. “You have to give people the opportunity to live where they want to live,” Geywitz told newspapers affiliated with the Funke media group.

With the Deutschlandticket, many people can afford “longer trips”. The minister was “confident that the ticket would be a great success”. For many people, 49 euros for a monthly ticket is “an enormous relief,” Geywitz said.

The 49 euro ticket is just the beginning

Ecological traffic club VCD welcomed the new ticket as “major progress for easier use of buses and trains” in principle. “It’s a respectable achievement, because it puts an end to the small-state structure of transport troops,” he said. However, important questions remained unanswered.

This applies, for example, to a uniform arrangement for social, youth and semester tickets. Federal states will need to “quickly find a joint solution so that students can also enjoy the benefits of the ticket at no additional cost.” The same goes for youth and social tickets, VCD explained.

The Federal Railroad Transportation Association hopes for a permanent increase in the number of users in local rail transportation. However, the qualitative and quantitative offer urgently needs to be improved so that additional passengers can stay with us in the long term. Not only the states, but also the federal government are in demand here.

The German railway customer association campaigned to see the promotion of the new ticket “as a start, not a destination”. The road is just beginning. “Of course, in addition to the problems, inconsistencies and contradictions that need to be resolved, a lot of patience is still required to further develop the Germany ticket,” said the association.
