Rents are rising in all cantons

Tenants are increasingly feeling the effects of inflation and the low vacancy rate. Rents demanded increased in September, not just regionally, but in all Swiss cantons.

Asked rents are the rents for which flats are currently offered in the housing market. In Switzerland, these rates increased by 0.7 percent in September. Rents across Switzerland increased by 2.8 percent compared to the previous year.

Rents are only moderately rising here.

This is illustrated by figures from the Swiss Marketplace Group, which calculates the Homegate rental index on a monthly basis. What is striking in the rent demands in September is the increase in all cantons compared to the previous month.

Rents questioned on a cantonal basis increased by 0.1 percent in Bern, Solothurn and Friborg, while the sharpest increase was in Graubünden with 2.8 percent. However, in Zug (2.6 percent) and Nidwalden (2.4 percent), increases from the previous month were more than two percent.

Nidwalden and Obwalden were badly affected

On an annual basis, increases in Nidwalden were most pronounced at 7.3 percent. But the increases were significant in Obwalden (5.2 percent), Zug (4.9 percent) and Schwyz (4.4 percent). A total of 19 cantons increased by more than two percent compared to the previous year, and twelve by more than three percent.

The Homegate rent index measures the monthly, quality-adjusted rent change for new and re-rented apartments based on current market offers. (SDA/dvo)
