Switzerland urgently needs to provide a safe, independent and environmentally and climate-friendly power supply: this is what the initiators of the popular initiative “Electricity for all (stop dimming)” demanded, and are now collecting their signatures. Behind the initiative are people from the circle of the Energy Club, an association of the nuclear lobby that was founded just a few years ago but is well-financed.

The initiative committee carries out an intense voting campaign on social media. In recent weeks, the committee has not only published its own content on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, but also used short excerpts from the SRF satirical program “Deville” dated March 19, 2023. These posts were also advertised on Facebook and Instagram. . Between mid-March and mid-April alone, the initiative committee spent almost CHF 3,200 advertising on the two platforms.

taken out of context

The quotations used give the impression that moderator Dominic Deville (48) is reporting on a nuclear energy revival and is a supporter of the initiative. Among other things, you can see how he refers to a poll by the Sotomo Institute that found young people increasingly in favor of nuclear energy. Finally, the “Stop Blackout” website is also displayed.

The quoted passages are taken out of context. In fact, a few seconds later Deville makes fun of “nuclear youth”: “Worry about radical climate youth or neo-Nazis like ‘Neue Tat’ and ‘Eisenjugend’?” he asks. “It’s all phone fax.” Now comes the nuclear youth!”

It should be a statement that those who started “Stop Blackout” are in much less material. Accordingly, he is not included in the committee’s Facebook and Instagram posts.

Deville and SRF don’t think this is funny

Dominic Deville saw the Stop Blackout posts. “They didn’t necessarily polish it,” he says. “Ultimately, this initiative is supported by circles that accuse me of taking everything out of context as a satirist. And now they’re doing just that.”

The initiative committee’s use of “Deville” quotes doesn’t even amuse the SRF. Media spokesman Florian Ott says independence is one of the core values of journalism. For this reason, SRF generally does not allow its content to be used for political or commercial advertising: “SRF is currently reviewing legal proceedings.”

The Swiss Energy Club is relaxed. Chair Vanessa Meury, upon request, had assumed that “use of material would not be an issue”: “The representatives of our committee were not asked by the SRF whether the portrait images and materials shown in the program could be used.” If the use of the material is a problem, those responsible at the SRF “may want to contact the initiative committee in the Swiss way”.
