Pope Francis celebrated Palm Sunday Mass shortly after his discharge from the Gemelli Clinic.

Pope Francis, 86, celebrated mass in St. Peter’s Square on Palm Sunday, after three days in hospital. The Angelus prayer was then said.

He was taken to the square by Papamobile. At the start of the celebration, the Pope abandoned the traditional parade of palm branches to commemorate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week before Easter and thus the beginning of the most important time of the Christian church year.

The Pope was discharged from the Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Saturday. He was hospitalized on Wednesday and was treated with antibiotics for “infectious bronchitis”. Francis’ hospitalization had fueled speculation about a possible resignation of the church president. (AFP/SDA)
