The Swiss Association of Youth Societies complains that the increased intensity and flexibility of paid work is causing stress and emotional exhaustion among many young people.

That’s why the house of delegates adopted a resolution presented by union youth on Saturday. “Reducing working hours for apprentices and young workers allows them to devote more time to themselves, other people and the environment,” said Lena Bühler, co-chairman of SAJV. Press release.

Youth associations hope that reducing young people’s working hours will also improve their health, as well as more willingness to participate, according to a statement released on Saturday.

Little interest in volunteer work

According to a study by Health Promotion Switzerland, 42 percent of employed people aged 16 to 24 report critical levels of stress that worries youth associations.

Delegates from youth associations such as the Swiss Scout Movement and Jungwacht/Blauring Switzerland also stressed the importance of volunteer work in Switzerland.

After the pandemic, many youth organizations struggle to find enough volunteers willing to join a club in the medium and long term. According to Volunteer Monitor 2020, the proportion of volunteers aged 15 to 29 in Switzerland is the lowest. (SDA/you)
