According to a study by Gryps, businesses aren’t sure how useful new technologies really are.

The digitization of the Swiss SME landscape is progressing steadily. A study conducted by the SME portal Gryps in collaboration with Mobiliar Versicherung and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Lucerne yielded interesting results about the current use of AR and VR technologies in 159 small and medium-sized companies. And how they predict the future.

Augmented and virtual reality offers companies the opportunity to streamline their operations and launch new products. However, not all companies are convinced of this technology.

Almost a third will never use technology

According to the survey, 31 percent of SME representatives said they would never see these technologies integrated into their operations. In addition, 80 percent do not have concrete ideas about the use of AR and VR technologies. Or they just don’t see a specific use case yet.

A current term in the tech industry is “metaverse”. But it’s not just about Facebook’s virtual reality product. “The metaverse is a buzzword for a vision of a future where the Internet can thrive. Gryps board member Maria de Bon (34) guides us through the research and teaching of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in the field of immersive technologies.

It’s a family business doing it

A family business at Ittigen BE has successfully adapted to increasing digitization: “MyCityHighlight” has been offering fun city tours using augmented reality components since spring 2021. The personal mobile phone serves as the main device.

MyCityHighlights provides its own implementation for this purpose. With the “Browser” and “Locator” functions, the environment is controlled by the application. The playgroup must find the right place in the various “posts”. As well as using the locator functionality or targeting a specific object with the scanner.

“After the mainframe, PCs, smartphones and cloud computing, we are now in the fourth wave of computing and networking,” explains Nathaly Tschanz. He is professor of augmented and virtual reality at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Lucerne. Digitalization offers companies the opportunity to optimize their processes and develop new business models.

Large population still inexperienced

But not everyone is ready to seize these opportunities. “Advanced are not just the biggest. A company’s decision makers determine whether to take steps in that direction. There are huge differences between companies when it comes to the use of technologies right now. There isn’t a lot of experience using VR glasses or headsets yet,” Tschanz continues.

What was MyCityHighlights like when AR combined with a new technology? “We wanted a new, digital product. The focus was not on technologically leading directions. We’re working with virtual crossovers, but we didn’t want to make them too complicated,” says Jasmin Hirsbrunner (26) of MyCityHighlights to Blick.

“We want to be able to provide a great experience for everyone with this new technology.” Initially, the target audience was set between the ages of 18 and 30, but it soon became clear that families and groups of friends up to the age of 45 were also interested in the offer.
