This is how a Zurich start-up secures the future of global company Canon

“It’s like going from a horse-drawn carriage to a Tesla,” Sabrina Schenardi, 44, is excited. st. Gallen is the co-founder of Zurich start-up BLP Digital and is responsible for the further development of the business. And this is about to take off.

Because behind the meaningless company name there is nothing but a revolution in document management, a central function for every company, big or small. Companies receive countless waybills, order confirmations, invoices, product inquiries or orders every day.

Problem: Each of these documents looks slightly different, each customer or supplier has their own way of writing invoices or creating order lists.

The machine needs a teacher

It was no problem for an experienced officer, but an almost impossible task for a machine. “We wrote something like the human eye,” said Schenardi, trying to explain the advantages of the startup’s software. A software that not only records the invoice accurately, thanks to artificial intelligence, but also understands it and processes it automatically. This means that the invoice has been checked and sent to the correct company or client account.

However, this only works if the machine is constantly learning. This needs people like Jessica Prisciandaro (36) who teach her how to learn. The Italian also worked at the famous CERN research institute near Geneva. Schenardi explains the spirit of optimism in BLP Digital’s programming rooms: “Our people really appreciate the fact that they can delve deeper into the world of AI with us.”

Big step for small company

The apartment in the old building in Seefeld, Zurich is bursting at the seams, and a “quantum leap” is often spoken of when visiting Blick. In fact, BLP Digital is so ahead of the competition that they feel compelled to partner with small start-ups.

We are talking about Canon Switzerland, which for the first time in its history offers third-party software as an affiliate. The IT giant not only offers cameras and printers, but is one of the world market leaders in information management. “With BLP Digital’s solution we can expand our portfolio and offer our users new, attractive and contemporary technology,” says Michael Maunz (50) of Canon Switzerland, explaining the unusual step.

It’s extraordinary, because without the help of a small startup, IT giant Canon would have been left behind in a document management solution. “When we attracted a few customers from Canon, they took us into consideration,” says Schenardi.

The business model is as simple as the software is sophisticated: BLP Digital earns a few cents for every document processed with its software. “We free employees from non-value-added work, thereby creating space for other activities,” Thore Harmuth (34) is convinced. Schnardi and brothers Tim (30) and Sven (29) are co-founders of the software company, along with Beck, which has only been around for about a year and a half. And now we can celebrate the biggest success in the company’s young history.
