Wanzhou was once targeted by the US judiciary. Knowledgeable circles confirmed to the German Press Agency in Beijing that a succession plan should be launched for his 78-year-old father, Ren Zhengfei.

The 51-year-old’s rise to senior management could increase major political reservations towards Huawei in the US. According to media reports, US President Joe Biden is currently considering tightening sanctions against the company. Therefore, Huawei may be denied access to semiconductors from major US suppliers such as Qualcomm or Intel. The US is voicing security concerns, which Huawei dismisses as unfounded.

The legendary company founder’s daughter became a central figure in the conflict with the United States in late 2018 when, at the request of the US judiciary, she was arrested in Canada on charges of bank fraud to circumvent sanctions against Iran. Meng Wanzhou was placed under house arrest in Vancouver for three years and fought a legal battle against extradition to the United States.

China has increased the pressure on Canada by arresting two Canadians suspected of spying in China. Diplomats spoke of “hostage politics”. Meng Wanzhou was able to return to her homeland, where she was hailed as a hero, after a September 2021 settlement with US prosecutors in exchange for the release of the two Canadians. The department was only shut down last December when US prosecutors asked the New York court to close the case.
