Carsten Spohr must stay Lufthansa boss

The manager, who has been on duty since 2014, will lead the German group, which includes the Swiss airline, in his third tenure for another five years until the end of 2028, according to the supervisory board’s decision on Thursday. CFO Remco Steenbergen, first appointed in 2021, is also confirmed by the end of 2028.

Together, the two executives led the group through the existence-threatening Corona crisis, when the company received billions of dollars in government aid but was fully repaid by the end of 2022. The current contracts of the executives were valid until the end of the year. “They will be particularly important when it comes to securing a successful future for the Lufthansa Group,” said Karl-Ludwig Kley, Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

The 56-year-old industrial engineer Spohr is a trained pilot and has held various management positions for the group since 1994 after a hiatus at Deutsche Aerospace AG. Prior to the corona pandemic, he was responsible for the three most successful years of the former German state airline. This Friday, the company wants to report its business figures for 2022, which again closes in billions of dollars in profit, at least operationally.
