The poster presents a front view of an airplane, while the bottom is replaced by a view of the earth from space. According to the news of the British news agency PA, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has determined that this does not reflect the truth.
The poster reads, “Connecting the world. Protecting your future.» (“We connect the world. We protect your future.”)
This was because the message was easily understood by consumers, as if Lufthansa had taken important steps to reduce its environmental impact. However, most airline-initiated initiatives will yield results only years or even decades later.
Lufthansa claimed that the poster was intended to draw consumers’ attention to the company’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of flying. It does not claim to harm the environment, and it is wrong to assume that the average consumer understands it that way.
ASA is a self-regulating body for the advertising industry in Great Britain. There are no means of coercion to enforce their decisions. However, they are considered binding. (SDA)
