2022 was a record year for SAC huts

This surpassed the previous record 2009 with more than 15,000 overnight stays. The turnover of day-trip guests or overnight guests rose to CHF 37.9 million, thus exceeding the limit of 35 million for the first time. 9.8 million came from overnight stays and 28.1 million from consumption. In the last 15 years, on average, each of the cottages has made a turnover of CHF 28.2 million.

Especially in the summer season, the visitor flow was the same everywhere. As SAC also explains, the warm and prolonged good weather combined with well-used sheds has in some cases led to water shortages. Only austerity measures and careful use of precious liquid prevented the cottages from closing prematurely.

Overall, SAC recorded a record summer with 295,734 overnight stays. Thus, the cottages exceeded the previous peak value in the summer of 2019 by 5 percent and the previous year’s season by 14.5 percent.

Four SAC huts had to remain closed

The winter season is back to the level before the 2020 coronavirus lockdown. Overall, the number of overnight stays between November and April rose 25 percent year-on-year to 78,561.

SAC failed to operate four clubs in 2022. Due to the landslide in Bergell GR 2017, Capanna Sciora is inaccessible via Val Bondasca. The Mittelaletsch bivouac was destroyed by an avalanche in 2019.

Trifthütte was severely damaged by an avalanche in 2021. Access to Mutthornhütte is officially prohibited due to strong rock movements caused by melting permafrost. SAC is looking for other locations for these two cottages in the Bernese Oberland. SAC reopens Gaulihütte in March, following its winter renovation. (SDA)
