Life is so good in your town

Life in Switzerland is perfect. Everyone envies our quality of life. So what determines this quality, are the criteria the same for everyone? The SRF online portal took a closer look at the nine largest cities in Switzerland and came up with some surprising results based on eleven different criteria based on current data from the Federal Statistical Office.

Zurich

Not surprisingly, the people of Zurich have higher incomes, but they also pay a high price for it: the vacancy rate in the city in Limmat is lower than in any other city. And surprisingly, Zurich comes second to last when it comes to cultural offerings.

Basel

Basel has the most childcare options, but the city is also very popular with thieves. There are five times more thefts on the Rhine than in Lugano. When it comes to public transport, Basel residents need not look for a far stop, and there are also plenty of shops just around the corner.

bern

If you have health problems, you should move to Bern. Waiting times should be short, thanks to the highest doctor density. The cultural offering is also impressive in the federal capital. And at night the city is quiet, traffic noise should be bearable for most Bernites.

winterthur

In the city where there are cyclists, there are fewer serious traffic accidents than in other cities. In contrast, there is a lack of space for childcare. And the public transport network and the network of shops are also not the densest – on the contrary. For this, the thieves make a wide winding road around Eulachstadt. Just like doctors, because the density of doctors in Winterthur is lower than in any other city.

gallen

In the city of Gallus people can sleep peacefully, the level of street noise is lower than in other cities. Peace has a price, they only come in Lugano St. Gallen and there is also a lack of childcare. There are more free apartments than any other city.

clover

Lucerne is the city of mediocrity and does not rank first or last in any criteria. Perhaps that makes the City of Lights the most livable city in all of Switzerland, a country where mediocrity is also celebrated. After all, doctors who take care of the health of the population work here more than in some other cities. And while the city lags far behind Geneva, it’s the second-noisiest city when it comes to street noise.

Lausanne

When it comes to average income, Lausanne performs the worst. However, there is plenty of space in the city on Lake Geneva, which has the second highest rate of greenery among all cities studied. When it comes to childcare, Lausanne also ranks second.

Geneva

No other city is as noisy as Geneva. At night, street noise is much more disturbing than in other cities. Heavy traffic is responsible for the most serious injuries resulting from accidents in Geneva. Most Genevans could do without a car. There are more tram and bus stops in Rhonestadt than in any other city. On average, it is only 159 meters from the nearest store.

Lugano

The largest city in Ticino places it at the top of several criteria. Apartment seekers should consider Lugano, where the vacancy rate is highest. Perhaps this is because the nearest store is on average 580 meters from where you live – more than in any other city. On the other hand, no other city has as much green space as Lugano, and nowhere else does it have so many museums and theaters for residents.
