Hargreaves Lansdown market analyst Susannah Streeter said Wall Street has been pressured by concerns that the slowdown in the pace of inflation is not strong enough to dampen inflation caused by rising prices.
Dow Jones Industrial fell 2.06 percent to 33,129.59 points, just above the market’s daily low. The broad S&P 500 fell 2.00 percent to 3997.34 points. The Nasdaq 100 was down 2.41 percent to 12,060.30 points.
There may already be indications of a rate hike in the minutes of the US Federal Reserve, which will be released on Wednesday. Disappointing appearances from retailer Walmart and hardware store chain Home Depot and a skeptical survey of “expensive U.S. stocks” by U.S. bank Morgan Stanley also dampened the mood.
