The plant in Podari, Romania, started production in the second quarter of 2022. However, Clariant said in a statement Monday that it has not yet reached the desired efficiencies and other operating parameters on an industrial scale.
Clariant’s Sunliquid process is used to extract sugar from plant residues (for example, wheat or corn straw) that is then fermented into fuel. This is second generation bioethanol.
However, Clariant stressed the “unique value” of the technology in its announcement. The company will continue to commercialize them. By constantly adjusting production processes, new technology must be made commercially viable.
The impairment will of course be reflected in the 2022 annual result. However, Clariant emphasized that they do not have any impact on liquidity. Financial targets for 2025 will be confirmed.
