A new cell phone every year even though the old one still works flawlessly? According to a new smartphone report from comparison service Comparis, 45 percent of surveyed Swiss can afford it. This has very little to do with sustainability. However, the image of the smartphone as a disposable product has changed dramatically, according to the study. The comparison service asked 2,100 people from all regions of Switzerland about their mobile phones. Other interesting, representative facts have also come to light.

Percentage of respondents indicate that they want to use their mobile phones for a longer period of time because of the higher prices.
But the reality is that respondents from all regions of Switzerland have been using their mobile phones on average for only two years. This value has been constant since 2019.

Percentage of Swiss have held their device for four years or more.
There are significant differences depending on the operating system. Significantly more iPhone users want to buy a new device in the next twelve months (48.4 percent). Android users (41.6 percent) can’t keep up. Especially people under the age of 55 want to buy a new device. It is noteworthy that after only twelve months in western Switzerland the willingness to buy a new mobile phone is higher than in the rest of Switzerland.
49
Percentage of people under 55 want to buy a new mobile phone more often in the near future.
In terms of sustainability, nothing much has changed compared to the previous year. Cell phones are usually still bought new in Switzerland. Just like last year, only one in ten smartphones is a used part.
Despite the general inflation, the desire to buy a new smartphone is higher than ever.
555
On average, respondents are willing to spend francs on a new mobile phone.
On average in 2019 it was still 100 francs less. Comparis expert Jean-Claude Frick says this is due to the fact that inflation in Switzerland has so far been moderate compared to other countries. “So consumers can still afford a lot.”
48
Percentage of respondents use an iPhone as their main device.
Significantly more young respondents (ages 18 to 35) were using an iPhone as the main device. Switzerland remains an iPhone country. For comparison: iPhones have a market share of just under 30 percent in Germany, and only 21 percent in France and Italy.
“Apple’s high purchasing power and strong quality awareness in Switzerland are also beneficial in the current inflationary phase,” says Frick.
30
Percentage of Swiss now own more than one device.
One-fifth of those surveyed use two smartphones. Mostly well-educated men between the ages of 18-35. “To us, this is a strong indication that the latter devices are predominantly business phones,” Frick says.
