Some demonstrators were blocked by people in hazmat suits and riot police.
In one live video clip, dozens of workers standing in front of a police line and a police car with blue lights flashing at night shouted, “Defend our rights! Defend our rights!” A worker pulls a metal barrier on the ground, clouds of smoke rise above a vehicle, and a voice in the background says, “They’re coming in fast! smoke bombs! tear gas!”
A photo taken during the day shows the burnt remains of a door that appeared to have burned at night.
Factory closed due to Corona epidemic
The keyword “Foxconn riots” was blocked on Weibo Wednesday afternoon (local time). However, some texts about the protests at the Foxconn factory can still be called upon.
Foxconn recently noticed a sharp increase in corona infections at its factory in Zhengzhou, so the Taiwanese company closed the factory. At the end of October, large numbers of workers fled the plant on foot. Some workers complained about the poor conditions at the factory, where more than 100,000 people work.
It can be assumed that the protests directly affected iPhone production. Just before Christmas, iPhone 14 & Co. will likely experience delivery problems.
The company initially did not respond to AFP news agency’s request for comment on the events. (SDA/storm)
