Pierre-Yves Perrin, Director of the Swiss Grain Producers Association (SGPV), said after a disastrous 2021 harvest year due to heavy rains and hailstorms, there is at least better harvest news this year. Yield and quality are good, even if the grain has been damaged by drought in some areas.
Very high energy prices and an uncertain energy supply as a result of the Ukraine war are also affecting grain producers, according to SGPV President Fritz Glauser.
According to Glauser, price increases in agricultural products may be partially passed on to farmers in Europe, but not in Switzerland. Tariffs protect the industry here when global prices are low. But tariffs fall when international prices rise, as border guards strive for price stability. This protection for consumers also prevents producers from directly benefiting from exploding world market prices.
