Our neighbors to the north are already bubbling for the new coke bottle! This is due to the newly developed screw cap, which was introduced in Germany. The cap can no longer be separated from the bottle. This is to avoid unnecessary plastic waste, according to Coca-Cola. It’s actually a good approach from the beverage giant. As one WWF study shows, “only” 0.08 percent plastic waste can be avoided.

“Let go and enjoy”
But that’s not all: the beverage company now even gives its customers tips on how to use the new cap. “If the new lid is used correctly, a small change should not diminish the enjoyment of drinking. Simply loosen, tilt the cover back, snap it in and enjoy” reads the instructions for use.

Spain and Italy already have
From 2024, new twist cap bottles will be mandatory for all EU countries. And they are becoming the new standard. In addition to Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria and the United Kingdom have already introduced the hinged lid.
“We see the new caps as another step towards further closing the recycling cycle and avoiding packaging waste,” says a spokesperson for Coca-Cola-HBC-Switzerland. Production machinery in the bottling division still needs to be adjusted before the new cap is launched in Switzerland in 2023.
