The rich are getting richer. This is also seen in the 2024 billionaires list of the business magazine “Forbes”. And this despite the fact that the initial situation was not very promising. But global stock markets have withstood wars, political unrest and stubborn inflation.
There are now 2,781 billionaires on our planet, more than ever before. There are 141 more than last year. Bernard Arnault (75) and his family remain at the top for the second year in a row. The French run luxury brands giant LVMH, including Louis Vuitton and Dior. They are worth an impressive $233 billion.
Behind him is Tesla’s founder and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk (52), who has a fortune of $195 billion. In third place is Mr. Amazon: Jeff Bezos (60) with a fortune of $194 billion.
USA and China are at the top
Additionally, there are now 265 new names on the Forbes list who can call themselves billionaires. One of them is OpenAI CEO and ChatGPT inventor Sam Altman (38).
Most billionaires are still in the US. They number 813. Together they maintain assets totaling $5.7 trillion. It follows China with $1.7 trillion and 473 billionaires.
Shortly before their 50th birthday, the first Swiss
While the first Swiss representative is ranked 48th, this position is shared by the entrepreneur couple Gianluigi Aponte (83) and Rafaela Aponte (79), who own 50 percent of the MSC shipping company and lost five places compared to last year. The ship captain of Italian origin still controls his empire from Geneva.
He is respectfully called “Komandante” or, less charmingly, “Captain Without Mercy”. His wife, Rafaela Aponte, does not hold an official position at MSC Empire but is on the foundation’s board of directors. Still, she always played an important role in the company. In 1970, they bought their first cargo ship, “Patricia” together.
The rich are getting richer
The fact that the rich are getting richer has been confirmed once again. A record 14 people worldwide now have a twelve-figure fortune, meaning they are worth at least $100 billion. This privileged group is 255 percent richer than it was a decade ago. These 14 super-rich people have a combined fortune of two trillion dollars.
