Fast e-bikes will need to be equipped with a speedometer from April 1.

From April 1, additional rules for vehicles will apply in Switzerland. They are related to driving assistance systems, car bodies and e-bikes.

The additional rules are based on a decision made in late December. The Federal Council wants to ensure that new vehicles have the latest safety systems. Mandatory driving assistance systems are used, for example, to warn of fatigue and distraction, but also for automatic emergency braking in case of danger. And they help when reversing and returning.

Trucks and coaches

The improved body elements, which will be mandatory from April 1, are intended to make the impact less severe in the event of an accident. This is to better protect pedestrians and cyclists.

Truck and bus drivers also need to have better visibility so they can see whether they are standing next to or in front of their vehicle. Tour vehicles and buses must also meet higher requirements in terms of rollover protection and fire protection.

Additionally, fast e-bikes will need to be equipped with a speedometer from April 1. Driving without a speedometer can result in a 20 franc fine.

Figures in the e-bike market

172,487

45,000 fewer e-bikes were delivered to bicycle retailers in 2023 than in the previous year. Thus, the market surpasses the record growth figures during the corona epidemic.

26,559

This was the rate of fast e-bikes with pedal assist at speeds up to 45 km/h. They increased by 16.6 percent compared to the previous year. It’s even more surprising since the sports and daily races each lost a good fifth place.

1.25 million

The number of e-bikes continues to grow rapidly in Switzerland. Sales figures are significantly above pre-Corona years.

1792

A leap into the past: In 2005, only 1 percent of today’s sales volume was transferred to the bicycle trade.

The speedometer requirement for fast e-bikes with pedal assist up to 45 kilometers per hour initially applies only to recently introduced bikes, the Swiss Touring Club writes. Vehicles currently in use must be equipped with this equipment by April 1, 2027. The purpose of the change is to ensure that maximum speeds are observed in zones with speeds of 20 and 30 km/h.
