Considering the many reports about housing shortages, one might think that the Swiss are moving less. That’s not necessarily the case. We are happy to act as usual. As the Post Office noted in its “Moving Survey 2023,” 404,868 households reported moving to the post office last year. This means a total of 624,513 people. With a population of just over 9 million, this means one in 15 people moved last year.
Naturally, the greatest turnover among people leaving cities and moving to cities is experienced in cities. St. Gallen recorded the most departures in Switzerland and Winterthur ZH recorded the most newcomers.
The chart below shows the net balance of people moving in and people moving out for each municipality.
Young people prefer to move
However, there is a clear difference when it comes to age. Almost half of people who move are between the ages of 18 and 49. People over 50 are also moving, but the desire to change their place of residence is significantly lower.
There are many reasons for changing your place of residence: It is usually due to a change in family situation or related to more living space for a more luxurious life. According to the Post, those most likely to move are one- and two-person households.
Four out of five people moving (82 percent) stay in the same canton or municipality. Most moves occur in July, September and October. And only 6 percent of moves were from an apartment to a house.
The postal service advises that movers should notify address changes before moving. And not just at the post office, but also at health insurance companies, insurance companies, banks and telecommunications providers. 3 percent of those who move are required not to inform any contract partner. Then no mail arrives.
