Tradition-filled cigarette factory closes – 220 jobs axed!

The traditional British American Tobacco Switzerland (BAT) cigarette factory in Boncourt JU is closing its doors. The factory was founded in 1814 and has changed hands several times since then. The last 220 people worked in the factory. Half of them are cross-border travelers from neighboring countries.

It is not yet clear how many of these will be released. The next few weeks will have to show it. In 2014, work was interrupted at the factory. This was because at that time BAT had closed a research area at the factory.

Jurassic government disappointed

The government of the Jura canton regrets this news, which represents a serious blow to the canton. The manager will ensure that the interests of Jura and its employees are defended during the consultation phase that begins now. He announced this in a statement Thursday.
