How does Mathilde Gremaud think about savings and procurement? The 23-year-old is one of Switzerland’s most successful freeskiers, has already won numerous medals in championship competitions and is competing in the World Cup this season. He has very clear goals for his future, just like in sports.

On the other hand, your generation sometimes has some difficulty in securing a private pension, as Raiffeisen’s current pension barometer makes clear. Accordingly, 36 percent of young adults have never thought about preventive care yet. Almost the same number has not yet opened a 3a retirement account.

The advantages of the “sooner the better” approach are obvious: there is more time for the money saved to grow, and anyone who invests retirement funds can also benefit from the long investment horizon and compound interest effect. Retirement assets also provide a sense of security and independence in old age and earlier in life. For example, if you want to buy a house or become self-employed. In addition, everyone who pays in column 3 also saves taxes.

Find out what Mathilde Gremaud thinks about precautionary measures in our interview.

You are on everyone’s lips this winter with your fifth win of the season in your sixth competition*. How do you feel about your current success?

Mathilde Gremaud: Great, of course it’s great that things are going so well. In recent years I’ve had a bit of trouble being consistent throughout the season because I’ve adjusted my form around the big events in January and February. But for this season without title challenges, I decided to be more consistent in the summer and prepared myself accordingly – also mentally. And it’s amazing how well it works!

What are your next goals and wishes?

Overall I’m on track to win the World Cup. This will be the biggest goal in terms of sports. Crystal balls are also possible in my Big Air and Slopestyle disciplines.* But the most important thing is that I stay healthy. This is the prerequisite for the sporting goals mentioned above. Besides, I want to continue to improve in skiing and personally.

What do you personally think?

For example, I want to learn to communicate better. I would like to open up more, especially in a team. I am someone who needs withdrawal periods during competitions. Of course they are part of it too. But I want to find a better balance between withdrawals and exchanges.

Freeskier Mathilde Gremaud in action: She has a good chance of winning the overall World Cup this season.

As a top athlete, you must focus all your attention on the here and now. To what extent are you worried about your future today?

In fact, it’s always a little more. I’m thinking about what I can do after my sports career. I want to be well prepared for this point, so I started studying for a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in sports management. I can also imagine passing on the experiences I gained from my sports career. I would love to do different things together. That’s why I decided to freeski at that time, because there are many disciplines here, plus there are always different tracks and parks, plus the snow is different everywhere… After my career, I want to continue this diversity in life as well.

The issue of finance is inevitable both in future planning and today. How interested are you in this?

Almost every day now. At first I didn’t want to know anything about it for a long time. I actually don’t need a lot of money during the season, I still live at home. But my family proactively approached the issue with me because they think it’s important. And I deal with that early. So they told me everything important about finance. I am very grateful to them for this. Now I manage my money myself.

So how do you evaluate your precautionary knowledge? For example, as the Raiffeisen retirement barometer shows, many young adults have not yet thought about this issue. What do you think about this topic?

When I think about this subject, “old age” always comes to my mind and I think that it is still far away. Still, I’ve been dealing with this ever since I talked to my family about it. I still don’t understand every technical term in detail, but the topic is important. I want to save enough and prepare for the future. I also want to treat myself occasionally. This is a thoughtful but not too rigid approach to money that my family modeled for me.

What do I know about the advantages of column 3? It’s really important to start as early as possible.Mathilde Gremaud

Let’s get back to private service delivery. What do you know about the benefits of pillar 3?

It’s really important to start as early as possible. You are unlikely to achieve wealth in a few weeks or months; This is a long term issue. And of course, you can benefit from compound interest. As an athlete, I am now able to capitalize on my successes. The prize money is basically on top of the fixed income I get. But I can’t spend it all and I don’t want to. Like I said, my upbringing was never like that and so I’m saving a lot of this for later. You also can’t really plan for sporting success and the financial success that comes with it. For example, what happens if I can no longer stand on the podium or if I get injured? All this also affects the financial situation.

When it comes to retirement planning, it often comes down to this: retirement account or fund – are you inclined?

I’m leaning towards retirement funds. I received detailed advice from my Raiffeisen expert. It feels right to me to invest in it. I don’t want to let the money sit in one account; This would be a missed opportunity. Thanks to good advice, I now feel in the best position for the future. The money is in good hands, which gives me a sense of security. But I can imagine setting a further route for later. I’m thinking of buying a house.

As an athlete, you often don’t have much time for other things and are on the move a lot. So where do you prefer to use digital solutions?

I’m generally pretty digitally savvy and do everything finance-related on my mobile phone. I installed the Raiffeisen e-banking application, which I found very practical. Everything is easy to understand, works extremely intuitively and is ideal for everyday money matters. I can find everything here at a glance, including an overview of my digital column 3a. If a question arises, I can always ask my advisor; I also do this with my mobile phone.

Despite your young age and stressful daily life, you have already thought a lot about your future. What tips would you give to your generation on how they can motivate themselves on these issues?

I always talk about finances with other athletes because they ask me: How did you do this and that? Especially as athletes, we have a different starting point than other fixed income and social security premium employees. The thing that helped me the most at the time was setting up a meeting with the bank. I think we turn to an expert for all sorts of things, so why not when it comes to finances? For me, doing without creates a false inhibition. It would be a shame not to use these valuable tips.

*The interview was conducted before Mathilde Gremaud’s competitions in Tignes (F). The Freiburg native achieved a victory and a second place here on March 15 and 16, thus winning all three of his targeted crystal globes.
