During a military exercise, the ruler of North Korea personally climbed into a tank.

According to reports in state media, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (40) introduced a new tank and got behind the wheel during the presentation. Wearing a black leather jacket and camouflage fatigues, Kim greeted soldiers and watched live ammunition drills from a command post, according to footage from KCNA news agency on Thursday. Later, the media reported, “Kim climbed into the new type of battle tank, held the control handle and drove the tank himself.”

According to KCNA, Kim said he was “very satisfied” with the “excellent hitting ability” of the new tank. The North Korean ruler also underlined “the importance of the role and mission of tanks in modern warfare” as well as “the need to hold intense exercises simulating a real war.”

Pyongyang threatened the USA and South Korea

The unveiling of the new tank took place on the last day of “Freedom Shield,” an annual joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea that includes, among other things, missile interception and air strike exercises. Pyongyang said in a statement last week that both countries would pay a “heavy price” for their drills.

Shortly thereafter, North Korean state media reported that ruler Kim was leading a large-scale artillery exercise with a contingent whose projectiles could reach Seoul, the South Korean capital. (AFP)
