Good for those who can pay a low deductible for basic insurance. Also the person who has the necessary funds for expensive additional insurance. Major dental work, an accident, or even a serious cancer diagnosis can burn a hole in your household budget.
A study conducted by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) has brought to light for the first time how important treatment costs are in the Swiss healthcare system. The study shows how costs can be divided by disease groups and medical services. To do this, researchers examined the costs of more than 40 diseases and accidents, as well as prevention efforts, according to “Info Santésuisse,” the customer magazine of the umbrella association of health insurers.

The table shows that the lion’s share is made up of mental illnesses, followed by neurological diseases such as arm and leg diseases and dementia. “Chronic, non-fatal diseases account for the largest share of costs in the system,” said Simon Wieser, health economist and co-author of the study.
Regarding the group type of tumors, he says: “The disease burden of cancer is very high in terms of mortality rate, high drug prices are always discussed, but proportionately the cost of cancer is not that high.” The sad reason: Cancer is fatal, osteoarthritis is not.
Although the study’s review period is a little later, it is clear to the study’s authors: Even today, after Corona, mental illnesses account for a large share of the costs. The current strong demand for therapy spaces, the intensive use of child and adolescent psychiatric hospitals and the expanded capacities therein demonstrate this. (euro)
