Most long-distance and regional rail transport in Germany has come to a halt again since the early hours of Thursday morning. This is due to a 35-hour strike by the German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL) over a deadlocked collective bargaining agreement dispute with Deutsche Bahn. (archive image)

The emergency schedule, a key proposal in rail transport, has been in effect since 2 a.m., Deutsche Bahn announced on Thursday. “DB expects a major impact on rail operations on Thursday and Friday,” a railway spokesman said when asked by DPA.

As in previous GDL labor disputes, only a fifth of long-distance trains are used on Thursdays and Fridays. For regional transportation the offer may vary significantly depending on the region. It was said that rail traffic should continue normally only on Saturday. The strike in freight transport started on Wednesday evening.
