You should not compare apples with pears. But the apples-to-apples comparison is legitimate – and that’s exactly what the consumer magazine “Saldo” did and found: There are serious price differences of up to 11 percent at Migros branches in the cities of Zurich and Basel.
Specifically: a kilogram of “Green Star” apples costs 5.60 Francs at the Migros branch in Zurich Kreuzplatz. The price of the same apple in the branch just 500 meters away from Stadelhofen train station is 5.20 Fr. Grapefruits, oranges, pears, tomatoes and eggplants were also “10 to 40 centimeters more expensive” at Kreuzplatz, “Saldo” wrote. Average price premium: 7.5 percent.
How could it be? As a spokesperson explained to the consumer magazine, there are two different price ranges in the Migros Zurich cooperative zone. Therefore, 30 branches of 100 Migros stores in the Zurich area are more expensive than the remaining 70 stores.
Which branches are more expensive?
Now the situation becomes mysterious: The Migros spokesperson does not want to explain which Migros stores outside Kreuzplatz are more expensive. “Saldo” knows: the shops in Zurich City, Zurich Central Station and Küsnacht, Thalwil and Zumikon also fall into the upper price range.
A similar picture in the Ren directory: Migros Basel cooperative also applies different prices for the same products in open sales. For example, in the branch at the Basel SBB train station. “Differences are typically around 10 percent,” a spokesperson told the consumer magazine.
Migros benefits financially
What are the reasons for price differences? At Migros Zurich, “cost-increasing factors such as rental prices or store opening hours” are responsible. Basel should have long opening hours, including Sundays and public holidays.
The financial additional profit of the Migros Zurich cooperative is minimal in percentage terms: According to the company’s own information, it increases supermarket sales by 0.1 percent. According to Saldo’s calculations, in absolute figures this figure would be 2.64 million francs in 2023. (nim)
