Swiss engines currently cause more headwind than thrust. Last year, Lufthansa’s subsidiary experienced delays in flight operations due to problems with engines from manufacturer Pratt & Whitney. Three A320 aircraft are already grounded. Just before the start of the summer season, the airline’s operations manager announced that Switzerland would be without eight aircraft in the coming months.
How important are defective planes?
88 airmen. That’s how big the Swiss airline’s fleet is now. If eight aircraft are not available, 9 percent of all aircraft are lost. “We are talking about several thousand flights during this period that we cannot operate on our own,” Swiss confirmed to Blick.
Is Switzerland now canceling my holiday flight?
But the airline has good news for its passengers: “We do not expect short-term flight cancellations at this time.” Bottlenecks were taken into account at the beginning of planning. If there are still individual cases, Switzerland will proactively contact the relevant passengers. “Depending on the situation, they have the option of postponing their flights to a later date or canceling their tickets free of charge.”
How will the airline compensate for canceled flights?
During this period, Switzerland will increasingly rely on wet lease partners Helvetic and Air Baltic. This means that other companies operate flights to Switzerland. Next summer’s flight program will use 14 machines from Helvetic, eight from Air Baltic and one from Edelweiss for Switzerland.
Latvian airline and Swiss regional airline are used on the entire European route network.
Do I now have to expect worse service?
So passengers pay Swiss prices and fly with another airline. Swiss counters criticism that passengers are having to deal with worse service: “The feedback we receive from our customers is generally positive.” The offer and service processes are the same. Even Switzerland-Schöggeli will not be missing.
In the rankings of air passenger rights representative Airhelp, Air Baltic outperforms Switzerland by 26 places. But there is still a bitter taste in the mouth: employees of the Latvian airline earn a quarter of the Swiss salary. The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs demands that Switzerland transfer the salary level for wet charter flights. But Switzerland probably won’t support this.
Can I cancel my ticket for a wet charter flight?
Whether a flight can be canceled depends on the purchase of the ticket and the relevant conditions. “Whether a flight is operated by a wet lease partner has no impact,” Swiss explains. It tells you at the beginning of the booking process whether a flight is operated by a partner.
