Approximately 3,000 people work at Micarna, a subsidiary of Migros.

Workers and Unia unionists chanted “Stop Micarnage” and “Solidarity with Micarna strikers”. According to Unia, further protests took place in Yverdon, Renens, Vevey, Geneva and Neuchâtel. There was also a picket line in Ecublens. Migros plans to close this location, which employs approximately 85 people, in April 2025.

Unia has been demanding to be called to the negotiating table for several days, noting that it has been mandated by “almost all” employees affected. In their eyes, “the services planned to support employees are far from sufficient,” Unia secretary Arnaud Bouverat told the Keystone-SDA news agency. On Tuesday morning, staff voted to extend the strike.

Migros’ social partners do not appreciate the strike

On the other hand, two social partners of Migros also called for the strike to be stopped. The Swiss Trade Association and the Swiss Butcher Shop Employees Association accuse the Unia union of trying to gain political capital at the expense of employees. According to a press release, the interference in a long-standing and well-functioning social partnership represents a clear violation of boundaries.

They regret the venue’s planned closure. However, measures to mitigate the consequences are set out in both the existing collective bargaining agreement (GAV) and the recently renegotiated social plan for the entire Migros sector.

Migros, on the other hand, stated that the demands of its employees can be met within the framework of the social plan implemented. Personalized solutions are offered in special and difficult situations. If negotiations are prevented, Migros will consider using a mediator. (SDA)
