The FAA announced Monday that regulations were violated in monitoring production, handling of components and product inspection, among other things. The authority is closely examining both Boeing and airframe supplier Spirit Aerosystems.
The review was triggered by a recent dramatic incident involving a nearly new Boeing 737-9 Max at the beginning of January. Shortly after takeoff, part of the fuselage of an Alaska Airlines plane with more than 170 people on board broke off while climbing. No one was seriously injured in the incident; The opening two seats were vacant.
The accident investigation agency, NTSB, assumes that the part was missing fixing bolts. Boeing had previously had to stop deliveries of this aircraft type for weeks and rework for months due to Spirit’s production defects. (SDA)
