The Swiss have varying levels of ability to handle money. The canton’s debt ratio varies greatly depending on the region. A trend is also emerging across genders.

The debtor ratio across Switzerland decreased by 0.5 percent compared to January 2023, falling to 5.6 percent. The number of overly indebted people has decreased, mainly due to a growing population. This was the result of an analysis by credit agency CRIF. All cantons managed to increase this rate.

Western Switzerland and Ticino with high rates

Residents of the canton of Neuchâtel are still shooting the bird. The debt ratio here is 9.3 percent. That means almost one in ten people are in financial trouble. This is followed by Geneva and Basel-City with 8.7 and 7.5 percent, respectively.

Solothurn (7.1 percent), Vaud (6.9 percent), Jura (6.3 percent) and Ticino (6.2 percent) are also still well above the Swiss average. The bulk of indebted residents are primarily from the cantons of Western Switzerland and Ticino.

Appenzell Innerrhoden is at the top

On the other side of the table is the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. The fewest residents here have debt, at just 1.4 percent. The central Swiss cantons of Uri, Obwalden, Zug and Nidwalden also have low debt ratios.

What about genders? By comparison, women do better. The most indebted people are men between the ages of 38-41. However, the gender difference is not present at all ages. Men and women aged 18-24 are equally over-indebted.
