There were always problems with “Konrad Adenauer”. Not with the former Chancellor of Germany, Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967), but with the Airbus A340 type government aircraft named after him, “Konrad Adenauer”.
No matter Angela Merkel (69), Heiko Maas (57) or later Olaf Scholz (65) and Annalena Baerbock (43): No one survived the broken jet; everyone has their own story. For example, while former Chancellor Merkel was on her way to a G20 summit in Buenos Aires (Argentina) with then-Vice-Chancellor Scholz at the beginning of 2019, “Konrad Adenauer” suddenly reported a technical defect and had to land in Cologne two hours later. .
According to the “Spiegel” investigation, the incident was said to be a serious and dangerous incident. Merkel and Scholz ultimately arrived late in Buenos Aires and missed the start of the G20 summit.
Engines are considered “high quality”
So it’s no surprise that after all the setbacks, people have long been calling for an end to “Konrad Adenauer.” Now it’s finally time. Government aircraft were scrapped. Lufthansa Technik bought the decommissioned government aircraft in autumn 2023 and now wants to cannibalize it, a company spokesman confirmed in Hamburg on Friday. It is stated that many parts of the 25-year-old jet can still be sold and used in other aircraft. Among other things, the engines are still considered to be of high quality.
According to the spokesperson, Lufthansa Technik regularly purchases old machines for later use. After a short stop in Hamburg, “Konrad Adenauer” is scheduled to fly to Teruel, Spain, for dismantling. According to “Spiegel”, Lufthansa Technik paid a single-digit million sum to the federally owned recycling company Vebeg.
What about the luxury shower?
The use of luxury private equipment consisting of bedrooms, showers and conference rooms remains unclear. A Lufthansa spokesman said that a decision on this issue would be made later.
The Bundeswehr’s flight preparation put the long-haul jet, taken over from Lufthansa, into operation in 2011, along with its sister aircraft, the Theodor Heuss. A new government aircraft of the larger A350 model now bears the name of the first Federal Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer. We hope this isn’t a bad sign. (nim/SDA)
