Even though 24 hours have passed since the scandal at meat processor Micarna in Ecublens VD, there is no solution in sight. According to the Unia union, employees of the Migros subsidiary are also on strike on Friday. Company management did not respond to employees’ demands. Unia continued that the administration had already rejected all offers for negotiations on Thursday and instead responded with pressure and threats.
Background: Migros Group announced at the beginning of February that it would lay off 1,500 people. Part of this situation also affects Migros’ subsidiary Micarna, as was announced to the public 14 days ago. The plant in Ecublens VD is scheduled to close in spring 2025 – there will be a loss of 84 jobs. Migros Group wants to concentrate meat processing in fewer locations, particularly at its headquarters in Courtepin FR.
Conflict reaches its climax
Responding to Blick’s question on Thursday, Migros said: “Unia is not a social partner of Migros and is therefore not relevant to our negotiations.”
The official social partners, the Swiss Trade Association and the Butcher Shop Employees Association, are not at all happy with the strike and are urgently warning the strikers about the possible consequences. In particular: dismissal without notice – without a social plan.
Unia also confirmed this today, Friday. “Management yesterday rejected all calls for talks and instead responded by putting pressure on employees. Strikers threatened that even the inadequate buffering measures provided by Migros would be rejected or the closure and therefore layoffs would be accelerated.
It is unclear how long the strike will last. (nim/SDA)
