It became clear at the end of January, it is now official. Textile company Cilander has to close. 190 employees were affected. It is the end of a traditional company headquartered in Appenzell Ausserrhoden since 1814.
Cilander refines 16 million linear meters of high-quality textile products every year. Exporting to more than 80 countries, the Herisau company was one of the leading suppliers in Europe.
However, the company has been struggling for a long time with rising costs and a decline in demand from domestic and abroad. The consultation process initiated did not produce a solution regarding the continuation of operations, as stated by the SRF. The closure will now take place by the end of August 2024 at the latest, possibly a month earlier.
Jobs can be saved
«Unfortunately, it is not possible to keep the entire company going. We are very sorry about this. We are currently focusing on maintaining certain areas under new owners. This will save us up to 30 jobs,” explained Chairman of the Management Board Rolf Schmid.
Of the three locations in Herisau, Lützelflüh BE and Flawil SG, the Appenzell subsidiary Alumo has the best chance of survival. Here, high-quality shirt fabrics are produced from Egyptian cotton, which Cilander then refines. “This improvement could also be made elsewhere,” says Cilander’s boss, Burghard Schneider. However, Schneider does not want to give further details about possible acquisitions.
Apprentices already have a solution
According to the CEO, other employees also have a good chance of finding new jobs in the region. The offers of friendly companies are “impressive”. There is already good news, at least for students. A connection solution has already been found for this.
Since 2022, Cilander has been co-producing, among other things, new combat suits for the Swiss Army. In Herisau, the fabric of army ponchos was made waterproof, camouflage clothing was made wear-resistant, and tent fabric was made opaque. (wgr)
