Emaciated, insecure, neglected: this is what Sam Bankman-Fried, 31, looks like in a photo taken at the Metropolitan Detention Center Brooklyn jail in New York City.

Next to him you can see other unknown prisoners. In addition to Bankman-Fried, only the prisoner “G Lock” is fully visible. He is a member of the infamous “Blood Gang”. He gave the photo to crypto reporter Tiffany Fong and gave her an interview in which he also testified about Bankman-Fried’s situation. Both are floating around on X (formerly Twitter).

big accident

Just 1.5 years ago, Bankman-Fried, or “SBF” for short, was living in luxury. He juggled billions with cryptocurrency exchange FTX, and his private assets were also impressive: Estimates put it at around US$20 billion at the end of 2021.

Then came the collapse: bankruptcy, financial fraud and accusations of money laundering. Found guilty in November 2023; The sentence will be announced within a month. SBF has been incarcerated in Brooklyn Federal Prison since August 2023 for violating his bail conditions.

And he clearly doesn’t like it. As “G Lock” said, SBF did not get beaten but let himself go: “At first he had a belly, was well-groomed and shaved. He now has a beard, he is emaciated, he looks like a toothpick, and he hasn’t showered in weeks.” However, this has nothing to do with SBF’s fear of “dropping the soap”; “G Lock” laughingly says that such practices are no longer in prisons no.

Although “weird”, Bankman-Fried said nothing on the inside and earned the respect of his fellow inmates.

Advert

By the way, the photo is from December 17, 2023; Prisoners are only allowed to take photographs during the Christmas period. SBF’s footage of him transferring to California in the summer of 2023 shows a completely different person.
