Are you still looking for an apprenticeship starting in summer 2024? Don’t panic: the choice is still huge.

For example, on the vocational training portal Yousty there are currently 1,800 apprenticeships in the retail trade specialist EFZ field. Or 1,110 places for training as a businessman/woman EFZ and 815 places as a cook.

Just because there are many apprenticeship vacancies in these professions does not mean that these professions are selling slowly. On the contrary: Yousty receives a large number of search queries precisely for these professional categories. Relevant reviews are available at a glance. Training as a computer scientist EFZ, medical practice assistant EFZ or maintenance specialist EF is also in high demand.

Only a third of apprenticeship positions are filled, but…

Looking at the information portal Berufsberatung.ch, we see the following: As of mid-February 2024, there are still approximately 31,000 apprenticeships available throughout Switzerland. On Yousty alone, another 2,250 new apprenticeships were advertised in the first calendar week of 2024. 6,500 new jobs have been opened since the beginning of the year.

Demand is stable: The State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) reported that around 26,000 apprenticeship contracts had been signed as of the end of January 2024. This represents around 33 per cent of the total of around 80,000 apprenticeship contracts signed last year; however, the total number of apprenticeship positions advertised is comparable. A year ago, at the end of January, only around 23,000 apprenticeship contracts were being signed. In other words: 8 percent more apprenticeships have already been offered this year.

Fewer apprenticeships in popular disciplines

However, this does not mean that the situation is better for companies. For example, there are currently 2,300 apprenticeships available as retail trade specialists (EFZ). This means 6 percent fewer open apprenticeships than in the same period last year, but the number of apprenticeships on offer is also almost a quarter fewer, according to Yousty spokesperson Stefanie Näf. Although companies are looking for significantly fewer apprentices, many are still vacant.

This also applies to cooks. 1,070 apprenticeship positions are still open, 10 percent fewer than last year. However, here too, the number of apprenticeships available decreased by 7.7 percent. Similar situations exist in the fields of electrician EFZ or healthcare professional EFZ.

As previously mentioned, approximately 6,500 new apprenticeships were announced between 1 January and 15 February 2024; the majority of these were 300 for the culinary profession. This is twice as many as a year ago. There are three times as many apprenticeship positions advertised for the healthcare professional EFZ profession, at 285. The number of apprenticeships in the health and social assistant profession EBA tripled to 178.

In contrast, 8,800 apprenticeship positions were filled in the same period. 415 in the Healthcare Professional EFZ sector alone; This is 2.5 times more than the previous year. Or 380 in the field of KV service and management EFZ, this is at least 50 percent more. But apprenticeships as cooks are also going well: 342 people have been awarded, which is 2.5 times more than at the same time in 2023. “There is huge momentum in the apprenticeship market in the culinary and healthcare fields,” says Naf Tight.

Slowly but surely the signature should be there

School leavers and others interested in apprenticeships should not wait long, despite the large number of apprenticeships available. According to Näf, “Many apprenticeships disappear from the market in February; this is much more than last year”. In the first two weeks of February alone, 2,950 apprenticeship positions were filled. In the same period in 2023, there were only 900 people. There are not many places anymore in popular sectors such as computers.

According to SERI, evaluations from the cantons show that apprenticeship quotas are similar to those in previous years. As in previous years, the filling of apprenticeship positions in German-speaking Switzerland is much more advanced than in Latin Switzerland: in Ticino, only 15 apprenticeship positions have been filled so far.

The precarious situation in the business world is taking its toll

It’s not entirely clear why apprenticeships are suddenly in greater demand again. Naf does not want to make assumptions.

The interface barometer carried out annually by the market research institute gfs.bern on behalf of SERI can provide information. This shows that about 82 percent of the 86,082 primary school graduates last year started basic vocational training or general education schools. This was slightly less than in previous years, as more young people than ever before in 2023 (some 9 percent) took a year off. Whether things will be different this year will be shown at the next sewing barometer in April.
