“We need ‘Swiftonomics’ for tourism,” Indonesia’s tourism minister says on “Bloomberg TV.” You heard right: US megastar Taylor Swift (34) now symbolizes an entire economic movement! But what does this mean?

Taylor Swift earns an estimated $13 million from each of her mega concerts. According to Forbes, Swift became a billionaire last fall. Moreover, it is not just their own cash registers that are playing: the cities where their concerts are held can also rub their hands. For example, a study conducted in the USA concluded that Swift’s two concerts in Denver alone increased the economy of the US state of Colorado by $140 million. Overall, Swift’s U.S. performances on her current Eras Tour are expected to generate $4.6 billion in additional spending from fans. For hotel accommodation, flight tickets or clothes purchased specifically for the night of the concert.

The Indonesian economy also wants to get a piece of the Swift cake. Indonesia is not yet on Swift’s tour schedule. The country looks at nearby Singapore with envy: Taylor Swift is performing six (!) shows in a row in the Southeast Asian city-state at the beginning of March. The concerts also attract fans from neighboring countries, who book hotels in Singapore, eat at restaurants and pump money into the economy.

Zurich tickets for 1000 francs

The Indonesian government is not the first to trap Swift: the pop icon has also received concert invitations from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, 52, Chile’s President and the mayor of Hungary’s capital, Budapest. The charm attacks were partially successful; Swift later added several tour stops in Canada to the schedule.

According to the statement of Indonesia’s tourism minister, a short break to Bali does not seem more realistic. Things are looking better for Switzerland: Taylor Swift will play two concerts at Zurich’s Letzigrund Stadium in July. These are making their debut in Switzerland and sold out in a very short time. The eagerly awaited tickets are on sale for up to 1000 francs on the relevant ticket platforms! Hotel accommodation in Zurich is also significantly more expensive on the relevant dates than on other days. “Swiftonomics” hits home.
