In particular, a large portion of food and beverage products are sold in plastic packaging (47%). According to the authors, plastic is popular due to its durability, machinability and low price.
This is followed by products in paper and cardboard packaging, which are mainly used for dairy products and dry foods such as pasta and muesli, with 32 percent. Aluminum cans (11%) and glass (7%) come in third and fourth place.
Overall, the authors see potential for improvement: With more sustainable packaging, the industry could save up to 30 percent in costs and 25 percent in greenhouse gas emissions.
For the research, the consultancy company analyzed the packaging of the world’s 20 largest food companies operating in the retail and consumer goods sectors in 2020.
