The Indonesian resort island of Bali has been charging foreign visitors a tourist tax equivalent to nine euros since Wednesday. As Bali’s interim governor, Sang Made Mahendra Jaya, announced, the money will be invested in projects to protect the environment and Balinese culture.

Tax is imposed on foreign tourists

The tax must be paid through the “Love Bali” internet portal and is valid for foreign tourists coming to the island from abroad or other parts of Indonesia. Indonesian holidaymakers do not need to pay taxes. Authorities say they prefer online payment to avoid queues when entering the country.

Millions of tourists come to Bali every year – according to official figures, from January to November 2023, after a huge drop during the corona pandemic, the number of these tourists reached almost 4.8 million again. For some time now, authorities have been taking more and more measures against bad behavior by holidaymakers. Tourists taking half-naked photos, especially in temples or other sacred places, always cause a reaction. (AFP)
