Not New York (USA), London or Dubai. Istanbul, the metropolis of Turkey, will be among the most visited cities in the world in 2023. According to the annual report of global market research company Euromonitor International, 20.2 million tourists came to the city from the Bosphorus.

One reason for the good performance could be, among other things, that the country has relaxed visa requirements for travelers from the US and Canada. However, the city feels the consequences of the dense tourist crowd and is taking precautions. Entrance to the world-famous Hagia Sophia mosque will soon cost the equivalent of 23.50 francs. It was free until now. 3.5 million people visit the mosque every year.

Hong Kong with great growth

Two European cities also appear in the top five. London is the second most visited city in the world with 18.8 million travelers, while Paris is fifth with 3.3 million fewer travelers.

The city that grew the most compared to the previous year was Hong Kong, with a population of 7.4 million. The number of international travelers increased by 2,495 percent. But the reason is clear.

Hong Kong was one of the last cities to open its borders following the Covid-19 lockdown. Therefore, the figures in 2022 were accordingly low. Due to the pandemic, all cities in the top 10 saw an increase in the number of travelers in 2023.
