Flexible pricing models at ski areas aren’t always a blessing.
Gian Signorell
Sports holidays started last week, especially in the cantons in eastern Switzerland. Anyone who spontaneously decided to spend a day skiing in Laax GR on Saturday, January 27, paid 105 francs for a day ticket. Tickets have never been this expensive this year. According to ski scraper “Observer” the ski area started the season on December 1st with CHF 73.50 per day. This corresponds to a huge price premium of 43 percent.
Laax is one of the ski resorts with higher daily ticket prices in January, along with Belalp VS (69 francs), Brigels GR (67 francs), Chäserrugg SG (71 francs) and Zermatt VS (105 francs). At Christmas and New Year time. These rates were lower in regions such as Savognin GR, Leukerbad VS or Aletscharena VS.

Trends are emerging
In almost all regions, daily ticket prices are cheaper on weekdays than on weekends. However, in a few regions, such as Arosa Lenzerheide GR and Scuol GR, prices do not react much to changing conditions and remain at the same level.
The dynamic pricing system, where prices increase as demand increases, causes controversy. SP National Assembly Member Valérie Piller Carrard and Bern EPP National Assembly Member Marc Jost state that the price system is discriminatory for families. Parents of schoolchildren are forced to book ski holidays during school holidays. Ski passes and also accommodation are more expensive during this period. Berno Stoffel, director of the Swiss Cable Car Association, said families can also benefit from cheaper prices if they book early enough.
