The SVP attack, which claims that retired Swiss people live in luxury abroad, is causing problems. “We received angry reactions,” says Ariane Rustichelli, 50, director of the Swiss Society’s international organization. “The propaganda against the Swiss outside is hurtful.”
AHV pensions abroad are significantly lower than in Switzerland. At the end of 2022, 126,000 Swiss people abroad were receiving an average monthly pension of just over 1,200 francs. “Low pensions are one of the reasons why some older people emigrate when they reach retirement age,” says Rustichelli. “Many of them worked hard all their lives and when they reached retirement age they went abroad because they could only survive in Switzerland but could no longer live with dignity.” Approximately 60,000 Swiss people over the age of 65 living abroad are not entitled to an AHV pension.
High inflation abroad
The AHV pension is also transferred to 663,000 foreign citizens outside Switzerland. But on average they receive only 524 francs per month because they have lower annual contributions. Rustichelli emphasizes: “All of these people have been paying money to AHV for years. Therefore, you have the right to benefit equally from these funds.
More than four in five people receiving AVH pensions abroad live in neighboring countries or in Spain and Portugal. Inflation in these countries has caused prices to increase between 11 and 16 percent in the last two years. High surcharges for retirees without cost-of-living adjustments. However, thanks to the high purchasing power of the strong franc, inflation has almost stabilized.
Does Switzerland save money?
Rustichelli also thinks the SVP attack is unfair for another reason. “Swiss people abroad are not entitled to any additional benefits, nor are they entitled to our compulsory health insurance,” he explains. “As a result, Switzerland saves money on these people because they do not impose much of a burden on the social system. AHV pensioners abroad, 13. Bad argument for why AHV pensions should be too expensive.”
The Swiss Overseas Organization did not accept the vote on two AHV initiatives.
