March 26, 2022 is a turning point in the Swiss watch industry; There is before and after. It was then (almost two years ago) that Swatch and Omega launched the Moonswatch. And it sparked a worldwide excitement that has only really come about with the launch of new Apple smartphones in the last two decades.

The Moonswatches were produced in a limited series of eleven and pay homage to the Omega Speedmaster that Apollo astronauts wore on their wrists during their journeys to the moon in the 1960s.

But things have gotten noticeably quieter during the moon hours in the last few months. The latest model was presented only at the end of December. However, this launch was noticed only by die-hard fans and collectors. The truth is: the excitement is over.

The current prices of second-hand Moonswatches also show this: According to data from Watchanalytics, the price of Moonswatch models still varies between 340 and 420 euros. More than the official retail price of 250 francs, but also significantly less than the best times when four-figure sums were the norm.

When will new support arrive?

A few days ago Swatch published a short video on Instagram without comments (see below). A video featuring Snoopy. The cartoon dog closes a bag full of lunar clocks and then howls at the moon.

Logical: Fans of Omega’s original Speedmaster are also big fans of Snoopy. So far, three special models of the cartoon dog watch are favorites with collectors. It is one of the few Omega watches that fetches higher prices than its original selling price on the second-hand market.

initial speculations

As early as January 2023, the “Handelszeitung” examined the question of how Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek could continue the great success of Moonswatch. The article described two possibilities at the time: First, the release of Swatch versions of iconic watches such as Patek Philippe’s Nautilus or Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak. Second, as we wrote at the time: “Speedmaster fans want Moonswatch versions of models featuring the cartoon character Snoopy.”

Snoopy special models of Omega Speedmaster: highly sought after by collectors.

Now is the time. While nothing is known about the hours or launch date, the online streaming scene only knows one thing. Secondhand retailer MGB Watches even released illustrations showing how it imagines Snoopy Moonwatches (see image above).

Moon watch on a full moon?

So when might Swatch Snoopy Speedies be released? Probably on Saturday, February 24th. Then there is the next full moon. And in 2023, Swatch took inspiration from the lunar cycle to launch new Lunar Watches. It would be appropriate for the first Instagram teaser to be released on January 25th. There was a full moon at that time too.
