Europe has a new scientifically confirmed temperature record, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed on Tuesday after a lengthy review by an international panel of experts; On August 11, 2021, 48.8 degrees were measured in Sicily. The previous record was 48.0 degrees and was measured in Athens and Eleusis on July 10, 1977. At the time, WMO recognized the registration without a lengthy review process.
According to WMO, the new temperature record was measured by an automatic weather station in Syracuse, Sicily, in the summer of 2021. The measurement data, measurement conditions and measuring devices were examined in great detail, so that the new European temperature record was confirmed only two and a half years after it was recorded. The results of the research were published in the International Journal of Climatology.
Europe is seriously affected by climate change. US geographer Randall Cerveny, WMO’s rapporteur on weather and climate extremes, said the new temperature record showed “an alarming trend towards the continuation of high temperature records in certain parts of the world”. “Much more serious excesses are likely to occur in Europe in the future.” (AFP)
