Lidl tills are well stocked. The company confirmed what Blick had heard from discounter circles in an announcement on Monday. Lidl, based in Weinfelden TG, reports “Record sales in the organic field” without giving specific figures. Organic food sales doubled in 2023 compared to 2019, the year of the pandemic. CEO Nicholas Pennanen (38) mentions “excellent business performance” in his statement.
Now their customers need to get something in return. Promise: Prices of 100 organic products dropped. This accounts for around a third of the Lidl organic range. Price reduction is not an action, it is permanent. Examples: Organic milk is 10 cents cheaper, organic grated cheese and salami are 50 cents cheaper, organic wood-fired bread and carrots are 30 cents cheaper.
Aldi is also on the rise
Lidl’s organic price cut was the biggest in its history. It comes just weeks after Aldi’s “freshness drive”. The discounted competitor expanded its fruit and vegetable range by 25 percent. Back in December, Aldi announced lower prices on “a large number” of organic products; for example, 30 cents less for cucumbers and 10 cents less for organic lemons. Looks like Aldi stores are doing well too.
Discounts are in greater demand when the population has to tighten their belts. Denner recently announced record sales of 3.9 billion francs for 2023. Also as a result of inflation.
Ultimately, the question arises as to whether Lidl’s price reductions are at the expense of organic producers in Switzerland. CEO Pennanen contradicts this: “Lidl Switzerland persistently overcomes low prices.” Hopefully the Lidl boss will stay true to his word in the future.
