Teenagers will need to get their parents’ consent through the app in the future before they can change certain parameters on Instagram, the US company said on Thursday. In the future, underage users will need to have explicit parental permission, among other things, to change their accounts from private to public.
The Meta Group includes Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, among others. The company has been subject to intense criticism for not adequately protecting its users, especially children. The company explained that with the announced changes, Meta wanted to “better protect adolescents against unwanted contact.” Additionally, parents “should be enabled to more easily influence their children’s Internet experiences.”
Critics have accused Meta for years of making it too easy for users, especially pedophiles, to use its online networks and messaging services to spread child pornographic material. More than 40 US states have filed a lawsuit against Meta, claiming that the company provides inadequate protection, especially against children. The EU Commission also launched an investigation into the child protection measures of Meta and other digital companies.
