“The overall economic cost of on-site payments in Switzerland is quite high,” says the analysis published on Thursday. According to HSG data analysis, the biggest cost for society is cash payments, followed by credit cards and debit cards.

HSG estimates that the total cost of payments made by cash, credit and debit cards in Switzerland will be around 7.3 billion francs for 2022. This corresponds to 0.95 percent of Switzerland’s gross domestic product (GDP).

HSG attributes the highest cost so far to cash payments, which cost Switzerland around 5.2 billion francs a year. Cash payments are followed by credit cards with 1.1 billion and debit cards with 1.0 billion.
