Javier Milei (53) appears in Davos without a chainsaw, but no less powerful. He used his 30 minutes on stage to deliver arguably the most persuasive speech on behalf of capitalism at the WEF in a long time.
“Free trade and capitalism are the only means to combat world hunger and poverty,” explains Argentina’s newly elected president. “Socialism will only bring us poverty.” He reads his speech from a piece of paper, his reading glasses perched on the tip of his nose. He barely looks at the audience, instead staring at the podium in front of him. The former economics professor spits out numbers and calculations in Spanish so quickly that simultaneous interpreters occasionally stumble.
Praise for entrepreneurship, blame for feminism
Although Milei does not shy away from criticisms of socialism, the swollen state apparatus, the West that has strayed from the right path, and capitalism, he also has praise: “A successful entrepreneur is a real hero!”
Black ice hits Milei at the latest when she touches on gender inequality. “The war of the sexes is ridiculous! The radical agenda of feminists creates obstacles to feminist development.” According to Milei, supporting women is unnecessary; the market determines this.
Vaud Minister of Economy Isabelle Moret (53, FDP) cannot understand this, as she told Blick after the conversation. His department also includes the Office of Equal Opportunity. “This is still necessary in Switzerland, there is still a lot going on. It also questions the necessity of a social safety net. But we couldn’t do it without him.”
According to Milei, the social safety net is already a result of socialism. And the West is increasingly turning to this. Argentinian president: “This is ridiculous!” says. The Argentinian example shows the effects of placing limits on the free market. “It doesn’t matter how many natural resources you have, how educated your population is, how much gold there is in the central bank.”
“Milei is not a great speaker”
After Milei’s speech to Blick, many people did not want to comment on the Argentine president’s statements. Swiss National Bank (SNB) President Thomas Jordan (60) rejects this offer with a smile. We remember: Milei’s plans include the closure of the National Bank of Argentina.
Former Nestlé boss Peter Brabeck, 79, is more willing to talk. “She is a provocateur, but the wake-up call came at just the right time,” Brabeck says of Milei. “The economic system in Switzerland was liberal for a long time, but here too the state is becoming increasingly influential. What is forgotten is that as a successful entrepreneur, I create values for society. “The more profitably I work, the more taxes I pay, the more I educate people and the more employment I create.”
SVP National Assembly Member Roland Rino Büchel (58) was also sitting in the room. He lived in Argentina for a while in the 90s. Later, she even had a professional relationship with Javier Milei. St. “I experienced first-hand what it is like to have money lose value by ten percent every day in Argentina,” the St. Gallen native said. When it comes to Milei’s speech, you also have to take into account where she’s coming from. “Milei is not a sweet talker, nor is she a very good talker,” says Büchel. He was still enjoying the conversation. “Someone needs to hold up a mirror to the people here.”
How does the climate liar fit into the green WEF?
WEF founder Klaus Schwab (85) also praises the Argentine president. While announcing his election victory on stage, he congratulates himself and calls him “an extraordinary person.” It’s understandable that Schwab would pander to WEF guests; It is not for nothing that everyone of rank and name goes to Davos every year. However, it is a bit exaggerated for Schwab, who has been painting his forum green for years, to make such remarks about a climate change denier.
Milei’s comments at the WEF could be polarizing. But what the vast majority of WEF attendees agree is that Milei’s uncomplicated, approachable approach is refreshing. After the end of his speech, Milei does not leave the stage from the side entrance like other speakers. Instead she turns directly to the audience, shakes hands and hugs she.
Milei also uses this power with the public: Compared to other heads of state, he traveled to Davos in economy class on a Lufthansa scheduled flight, not on a government jet.
